Wow, looks good. The tail reminds me of a Sebring convertible for some reason though. I know they don't look anything like each other, it just does. That said it was about what I expected. A good looker that a lot of people won't buy just because its a Volvo.

The C50 name seemed to make much more sense, since this car is supposed to be placed lower on the market and also because the C70 didn't really create a following ( good car, just not very successfull ).
And i can't believe i'm saying this but... this car needed a longer front overhang. From some angles the rear kinda looks like it was grafted there.

Looks really good. Very sleek for a Volvo.
I think they didn't want to name it C50 then price it any where near the current C70 because some people really read into the numbers designated to car name and would consider it a lower model. This car is in every way better than the current C70 so I don't see it being that much cheaper if cheaper at all than the current C70...
I have to agree this is one of the few conv'ts that look better with the top up.

with the top up the car looks like the peugeot 407 from the side. i noticed this car doesnt have a b-pillar. do most 2+2 hardtop convertibles not have b-pillars? come to think of it...how many 2+2 hardtop convertibles are out there on the market?

I agree with the pricing.
Think of the Saab 9 3 convert. that is much more expensive than the sedan, also add the A4, same logic
But this is one sweet car,
a woman's car ? maybe...
Very nice!! Looks very hot, sexy, sleek, and conservative. I still love the current C70 its gorgeous.
Im sure it will sell well. I was just thinking and umm maybe the reason they named this car C70 is because there might be a C90 coming later based on the S60/S80 platform. Here's a info on the all new Volvo C70 from Carsguide.com.au:
Volvo has rolled its tin top C70 Coupe and drop top cabriolet into one car the new C70 cabriolet complete with a retracting metal roof.
Body rigidity or the lack of was a problem that blighted the previous model which suffered from a serious case of the DTs on moderately bumpy roads.
That's been fixed this time around with a doubling of chassis strength.
The fast operating three-piece retractable hardtop means owners will enjoy driving without compromise whether the top is up or down.
The new C70 will be unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
According to Volvo info, the new C70 still offers impressive interior size and seating for four adults like its predecessor.

And safety is of an extremely high order offering both preventive and protective systems in a cabriolet.
The car has an advanced body structure and several solutions that give it an edge among open-top cars.
An example is the door-mounted Inflatable Curtain (IC), which is part of the enhanced protection system for side impacts. Since the IC cannot be located in the roof, as it is in all other Volvos, the Inflatable Curtain is located in the door and inflates upward when deployed.
To provide additional protection if the car rolls over, the curtain deflates slowly.
New C70 is also equipped with Volvo's Rollover Protection System (ROPS).
The body structure is a carefully designed network of beams giving extremely high torsional rigidity.
New Volvo C70 will be powered initially by in-line, five-cylinder petrol engines topped by the turbocharged 2.5-litre T5 developing a maximum of 162kW/320Nm.
Australian will also receive the naturally aspirated, in-line five-cylinder, 2.4-litre engine delivering 125kW/230Nm.
The development and manufacture of the all- new Volvo C70 is the result of a joint venture with Pininfarina.
It's built in Sweden.
Anticipated on-sale date in Australia is the second half of 2006 with prices up to 10 per cent less than the current model.

"Irvine CA Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) today released the first official photos of the all-new C70. With its innovative three-piece retractable hardtop, the second generation C70 is a car that provides the customer with premium choices.
(All vehicles have compromises). . With the top up, it's a sporty coupe with dramatic, head-turning style. With the top stowed below the rear deck, it's an open-air convertible that invites wind-in-the-hair fun and excitement. What makes the all-new C70 even more appealing is that there is room for four people.
The all-new Volvo C70 will be unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, with sales beginning in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2006 just in time for summer.
Weve succeeded in creating an attractive convertible which, at the mere touch of a button, converts into an equally elegant coupe. The customer gets two cars in one. Both with space for four adults, says Volvo Cars President and CEO Hans-Olov Olsson.
Style-conscious convertible buyers will find the design of all-new C70 offers all of the freedom of a soft top, with the utility and personal security that only a hardtop can deliver upon. The forward-thrusting nose section and aggressively raked rear glass gives the car a powerful profile. Putting together harmonious lines both with and without a roof is no easy job, says Fedde Talsma, design manager for the all new Volvo C70. We decided to start with the bold shape of a sports coupe and when we were satisfied with the result, we made the necessary adjustments to create a convertible. Along its flowing fenders are the now ubiquitous shoulders that have become a Volvo design icon.

Unique Safety Solutions
The all-new Volvo C70 was developed to offer new standards of preventive and protective safety in the convertible market. The car has an advanced body structure and several solutions that make it unique among open-top cars. The lack of a fixed roof has been compensated for by reinforcements in the structure and sophisticated safety technology. One unique example is the new door-mounted inflatable curtain, which is part of the enhanced protection system for side impacts. Since the door-mounted inflatable curtain cannot be fitted within the headliner like other Volvos, it is fitted in the door and inflates upwards when it is deployed.
Volvo's safety engineers have fine-tuned the door-mounted inflatable curtain to be extra stiff. As a result, it remains upright for a longer period of time and helps to better protect the head in the event of a side impact. In addition, the curtain deflates slowly to help provide additional protection if the car rolls over. This is a unique solution in the automotive world.
High Torsional Rigidity
The body structure, in a carefully designed network of beams, not only contributes to the cars high safety standards, it also gives the body extremely high torsional rigidity twice as high as that of the previous C70 Convertible. With the roof up, torsional rigidity is increased by an impressive 10-15 percent over the convertible.
A torsionally rigid body is important to the cars ride and handling traits, says C70 project manager Patrik Widerstrand. It makes the car more stable and easier to control. It also makes the car more dynamic and fun to drive. In the U.S. the all-new Volvo C70 will be powered by 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 218 hp and offers 236 lb.-ft. of torque.
Cooperation with Pininfarina
The development and manufacture of the all-new Volvo C70 is the result of a joint venture with renowned Italian company Pininfarina. Pininfarina is an excellent partner with long experience of developing and building convertibles, said Hans-Olov Olsson. Like its predecessor, the car will be built in Uddevalla, Sweden.
The first-generation C70 Convertible had its best year in 2004 with just over 8,000 cars sold globally. U.S. sales in 2004 totaled 4,069 units. Our all new C70 is one of the first open-top cars in the premium segment with both a steel roof and space for four adults. We believe this is a highly sought-after combination. Thats why we expect to more than double our sales compared with the first-generation C70, says Hans-Olov Olsson. Design analysis:
I understand that volvo prides itself in having understated designs, but come one, the front could be a lot more exciting. And the rear is trying to hard to be daring. The side profile is quite nice and the roofline is quite well executed, and especially since it's hardtop convertible. From that side profile pic of the interior, it'll pretty good, esp. with that slim console, but i wish they would incorporate a better boot for the gear shifter. I remmeber that the S60 had this "spaceball" design annd I think that they should implement it on this design, esp. to highlight the "high-techy" ambience.
Just my $0.02

THE ALL NEW VOLVO C70 A CONVERTIBLE AND COUP

-World debut at Frankfurt motor show in September.
-Convertible and coup with unique 3-piece retractable hard top.
-Similar size to predecessor, with space for four adults.
-Choice of five-cylinder petrol engines, including 220 bhp T5.
-Developed in conjunction with Pininfarina.
-Unique safety innovation: door-mounted, extra stiff, Inflatable Curtain.
-Available to order mid-September with first UK deliveries early 2006.
Come rain or shine, the all new Volvo C70 convertible, that also doubles as a coup, is set to make its world debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
Thanks to a unique three-piece retractable hardtop, customers of the second-generation, all new Volvo C70 can enjoy life without compromise whether the roof is up or down.
"Weve succeeded in creating an attractive convertible which, at the touch of a button, converts into an equally elegant coup, giving the customer two cars in one with space for four adults," says Volvo Cars President and CEO, Hans-Olov Olsson.
Design
The all new Volvo C70 is about the same size as its predecessor, and remains a full four-seater, with a sleek design whether the roof's up or down, and is immediately recognisable as a modern Volvo.
"Putting together harmonious lines both with and without a roof is no easy job," says Fedde Talsma, design manager for the all new Volvo C70. "We decided to start with the coup design. When we were satisfied with the result, we made the necessary adjustments to create a convertible out of the coup lines, which our experience tells us is the best way of going about it."
Unique safety solutions
Volvo has developed the all new Volvo C70 to offer new standards of preventive and protective safety in the convertible market. The car has an advanced body structure, greater torsional rigidity and several innovations that make it unique among open-top cars.
A unique example of this is the new door-mounted Inflatable Curtain (IC), part of the C70's enhanced Side Impact Protection System (SIPS). As the IC cannot be fitted in the roof, like the rest of the Volvo range, it has been innovatively fitted in the door to inflate upwards instead of downwards. Volvo's safety engineers have also fine-tuned the IC to be extra stiff so it can stay upright and help protect the head more effectively. In addition, the curtain then deflates more slowly to provide additional protection if the car rolls over.
High torsional rigidity
The all new Volvo C70's carefully designed body structure not only contributes to the cars high safety standards, it also gives the body higher torsional rigidity and with the roof up, torsional rigidity increases by a further 10-15 per cent.
"A torsionally rigid body was an important criteria for the new C70s driving behaviour," says Volvo C70 project manager Patrik Widerstrand. "It makes the car more stable, easier to control and therefore safer but also makes the all new C70 more dynamic and fun to drive."
In the UK, the all new Volvo C70 will initially be offered with two in-line, five-cylinder engines the range-topping, turbocharged T5 producing 220 bhp and torque of 320 Nm; plus a normally aspirated, 2.4-litre unit producing 170 bhp. In addition, a five-cylinder, 180 bhp diesel engine is due to join the range during 2006.
Cooperation with Pininfarina
The development and manufacture of the all new Volvo C70 are the result of a joint venture with renowned Italian design company Pininfarina and, like its predecessor, the car will be built in Uddevalla, Sweden.
Sales
Full details, including prices and specification of the all new Volvo C70, will be released at its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September, when order books will also open at UK dealers, with the first C70s expected to be in showrooms and delivered to customers in early 2006.
"Our all new Volvo C70 is the first open-top car in the premium segment with both a steel roof and space for four adults. We believe this is a highly sought-after combination. Thats why we expect to more than double our sales compared with the first-generation C70," says Hans-Olov Olsson.
The first-generation Volvo C70 Convertible had its best year in 2004 with just over 7,000 cars sold globally, with over 1,500 (or nearly one in five of them) coming to the UK its second best-selling market (after the USA).
Newspress and Volvo
will reupload photos later on

OMFG! Thats absolutly amazing. The rear tail lights look fantastic! And i love how they have made the front really curvy, yet you couldnt call it anything other than a Volvo. In concept, it reminds me quite a bit of the Peugeot 406 coupe. I like it qute a bit. 220hp does seem a bit low, but for the size of the car and target market, it should be enough

This car looks remarkably like the C70 coupe from 1996 (and it's subsequent convertible variant - at least with the top down). The only major visual differences seem to be the slightly more sculpted bodywork (including taillights) and less brightwork on the front. A beautiful vehicle indeed, but I don't see any major breakthroughs ion volvo's current design language occurring here.

Volvo has released the first photos and details on the C70, which will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
The new C70 is about the same size as its predecessor, equally wide and a full four-seater. With the retractable hardtop down, the C70 lets in the sun as a true convertible. Am I the only one who doesn't think the C70 is nothing special? Just looks like a coupe/convertible version of the S60 with the interior of the S40 - neither of which actually look that good.

Well topsecret, the new more radical design phase will come into show soon, so after the S80 Volvo models should start to look more radical.
But i still love this car, certainly one of my favourite convertables

This car shares nothing with the out-going model and it looks much better. Yes it does share the same basic look like most new Volvo's but then again look at Audi, VW, SEAT or even Alfa Romeo..they all have very similar looking models as part of their corporate identity thing. But either some ppl like it or not, this thing is a dramatic improvement over the under-achiever which is the current C70.

I never liked this car. Hood is too short and boot is too long, spoiling the looks. But white is nice, that's true.

I still don't get why Ford did not just use the C70's roof mechanism -which also helps with the car's proportions- on the Focus CC.

I still don't get why Ford did not just use the C70's roof mechanism -which also helps with the car's proportions- on the Focus CC.

One simple reason: Cost, more specificly unit cost. A 3 piece thing is usually much more expensive in production, and Focus CC is the cheapest CC around (leaving the old Megane now selling on massive disscounts out).
However Opel employing a 3 piece unit on the Astra TT must have been a shock for Ford back then, they must have thought only VW will have it on the Eos.

Anyway, I kind of doubt the Focus CC will have a replacement, it is pretty much a flop, honestly, and with the Audi A3 and the 1 series having fabric roofs, I guess that IF there will be a folding roof Focus, it will be a fabric one.

I know cost is a major factor but using them on both the C70 and the CC would have made it more viable in the long run.
Personally i love the Focus CC despite its awkward looks (or even because of them) but you are right, it was a flop (mainly due to reliability issues with the roof) in most markets (sold well enough here though) and making a sequel probably sounds unlikely but i do wish they consider it. I think a sexy looking Mk3 CC might go down very well in NA
