View Full Version : 2008 Fiat 500
just back to the 500, see Fiat have taken 40,000 orders from Italian dealers!
wow its hard to believe that when Fiat launched the original concept car in 04 i think, they weren't sure if they were ever going to build it, the whole group was a such a low point that although everyone was screaming at them to make it, they didn't officially indorse the new 500 for ages after the concept!

Dollar is plummeting fast...so let's hope we'll still see those Euro models. Though it'll probably be a waiting game to see what our energy prices and value of dollar will do.
I know they can build it in a 3rd world country and bring it here, but shipping costs are skyrocketing too. Waiting an available transport ship is few years, not to mention building with high costs of metal. So...best thing to do is build somewhere in NA.

Hng on a sec, u got me confused: which MINI facelift are u talking about? Cause the current model is not a facelift, its a brand new car and i think even the subtle exterior changes make it look much better and so do most of the ppl ive talked to. So it seems, once again, u can get very contradicting opinions over a car. Also how can u be so sure that if Fiat made a Clubman type of variant the would do a much better job? Quite frankly i think u are overly biased against MINI with no real facts backing up your arguements. Dont forget that if it wasnt for the phenomental success of the MINI the new 500 would not have even been designed on paper today.
Now for the Clubman in general im actually liking that and i might have bought one if i preffered estate type of vehicles over normal hatches

today i went to a fiat dealer and checked the 500 out. good looking and well put together. quite a nice car. the one i sat in had leather seats! it's also more spacious than you'd think inside. it feels small, tha car isn't wide and the windows are small, but i sat in the back and it wasn't bad at all. the boot's ok too. i do think the glass roof could be a wise choice: it would make you feel like the car is more spacious and "airy" while sitting inside.
thumbs up!

Delicious and quite cheap (i've seen it at 25 €) official 1:18 model.
Two funny things:
- the version you see in the picture... actually doesn't exist for the real car! Outside it is a Lounge (elegant top version), with crome inserts, alloy wheels, glass roof ect. Inside it is a Pop (entry level version) with white and red (gorgeous) interior.
And you can not order a Lounge with Pop interior.
- the version you see in the picture... is exactly the the one i've ordered, in every single detail.
I had to pick a Pop and fill it with almost any accessory that a Lounge has.
This costed me a few more euros and... one extra month of waiting.
If i'm lucky, in 3 or 4 weeks it will be in my hands.

I see. The 500 came over in LHD form due to high demand from the UK. Can't wait to see it in flesh. Hopefully, I'll gather some money in the near future and order one but I'm not liking the 1 year UK waiting list :(

Australia doesn't get the Fiat 500 until the end of March 2008. Our allocation for the whole of 2008 is 1,000 units and already 500 units of the Fiat 500's have been pre-sold.
Fiat in Australia is expceting a similar waiting list to that of the UK, around 12 months.

I got a UK brochure through the post this morning. It's bloody good, shows loads of the options for personalising your car with transparent plastic overlays (you'll see what I mean). No price list though.
RHD cars need different interiors (obviously) and steering racks, brake pipes and front bulkhead. All are produced in lower volumes than their LHD counterparts so don't enjoy the same economies of scale. However, you'd like to think that these costs are taken into account at a total project level and then all the pricing world-wide could be aligned to cover the global costs. However, that'll never happen.

My review of the car;
Good - Spacious cabin especially with glass roof, great front head/leg room, fashionable and chic and funky interior, low running costs
Bad - Rear headroom made me feel claustrophobic, rear legroom is poor and my knees dug into the drivers seat and the centre console looks empty in my opinion

Can't believe a beat haji in posting a special edition of..er..any model but here it is!
The Castagna Fiat 500 WoodyWagon (LOLOL)
http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2700/images/1/large.jpg
Wood has been largely superseded in recent years as a car-building material by, well, stuff that doesn't catch fire. Or snap. Or splinter. Mostly, anyhow (http://www.topgear.com/content/news/stories/2636/).
But that hasn't stopped Italian coachbuilder Castagna putting together the WoodyWagon (honest), a stretched Fiat 500 that might just give a few clues to the styling of the official estate Cinq, set to arrive later this year.
We can't imagine it'll get the WoodyWagon's old-school grain panelling, but beneath that B&Q-chic exterior lurks a stretched chassis with a bigger boot and more upright tailgate - all of which seems to fit rather nicely with the 500s cheery, curvy lines.
Castagna's engine modifications sound tasty, too. The 500's 1.4-litre 100bhp unit has been fitted with a supercharger, boosting power to 155mph and allowing the 500 to hit 60mph in under eight seconds. If you fancy an Abarth but suffer from an irrational phobia of scorpion decals, you know where to go.
Castagna has also created a wood-panelled Mini Clubman, named the Mini Woody Passion Kit. It sounds like a pocket-sized sex aid and looks even less appealing. Oh dear.

I got to sit in a 500 at the auto show and it's pretty nice. The materials aren't fantastic, but they're decent enough and the styling/charm is more than enough to make up for any fit-and-finish shortcomings anyway.

50k units was an entirely unrealistic target to meet. Don't think the MINI sells 30k a year.
Also believe that the person they chose to run the operation in the crucial first year was a terrible choice to make. Rollng out a new vehicle brand is hugely difficult and expensive. Just ask Land Rover, Infiniti, Lexus etc.
Whats needed in the first year is operations capability, with a strong dash of marketing.
Definitely didn't have the first, and failed to marketing department as well. Its amazing how quick the media has been to sabotage all the Jlo adverts, especially the first one.
As if Jlo is really going to drive a 500.

Someone posted an article regarding the challenges that the Fiat 500 faces as well how it will find its place in the American automobile market
http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20111121/RETAIL07/311219964
Chrysler Group is sharply outperforming the market this year, has charted a healthy course to profitability and has paid back its government loans.
But the small, peppy Fiat 500 hasn't kept the same pace.
The Italian subcompact is well behind the 50,000-unit annual target once envisioned by Sergio Marchionne, the Chrysler-Fiat boss. Since sales began in March, only 15,826 were sold through October.
And last month 29 of Fiat's 130 U.S. stores didn't sell a single one.
Internal Chrysler Group documents obtained by Automotive News show that, based on current selling rates, Fiat had roughly a half-year supply of Fiat 500 coupes and convertibles on Nov. 1. That's 13,730 units, almost as many as have been sold since March.
In an effort to get things moving, Fiat began offering a $500 cash rebate this month.
But the move comes too late to stave off production cutbacks. This month, because of slack demand, Chrysler laid off or reassigned 65 workers who build the engine for the Fiat 500 in Dundee, Mich.
Today, Chrysler parted ways with Laura Soave, 39, a former marketing executive with both Ford and Volkswagen, who became head of the Fiat brand in North America in March 2010. She left the company to pursue other interests, Chrysler said in a statement.
The automaker named Timothy Kuniskis, 44, to replace Soave as head of the Fiat brand for North America. He had been director for both the Chrysler brand and Fiat brand product marketing, the company said, adding that the move is effective immediately.
The launch of the 500 was a key part of Marchionne's plan to reintroduce the Fiat brand to North America and give Chrysler Group a subcompact.
When Marchionne took over Chrysler Group in 2009, the smallest, most fuel-efficient vehicles the domestic automaker had were the compact "triplets" -- the Jeep Compass and Patriot and Dodge Caliber, none of which got more than 30 mpg on the highway, and all of which sold poorly.
Chrysler hired Jennifer Lopez to pitch the 500 in a series of national TV commercials and asked dealers to build expensive separate showrooms to reintroduce Fiat in North America.
So what's the problem?
Are sales slow because U.S. drivers don't want a car that small, or because Fiat has been too slow in rolling out its dealerships?
Marchionne doesn't blame the car. Some dealers do.
"The distribution network is probably half a year late," Marchionne told reporters last week on the sidelines of a Chrysler event in Toledo, Ohio. "We need to continue to work on distribution."
Marchionne said Chrysler had "50 dealers or 60 dealers" for most of 2011. "I think Ferrari has more dealers than that," he said.
Marchionne said the company underestimated the time it would take dealers to finish work on their stores.
Major investments
Instead of allowing existing Chrysler Group dealers to open Fiat sections in their showrooms, Fiat required the dealers to sign separate franchise agreements and eventually open separate facilities, which can cost as much as $3 million.
Most Fiat dealers also have Chrysler dealerships. They could build temporary facilities in their existing stores but were required to erect separate, permanent stores by the end of 2012.
Chrysler said last week that it had achieved its goal to open 130 Fiat stores this year.
But dealers who have made major investments in new showrooms say the biggest sales obstacles are the 500's petite size and less-petite price.
The base Fiat 500 sells for $16,000, including shipping.
"We have customers that feel the car is really cute, and they wanted to see it, but they say they wouldn't buy a car that small," said David Rovny, general sales manager at Reedman-Toll Fiat in Langhorne, Pa. "People are expecting the car to be less expensive because of the size."
Some dealers sold as few as 49 cars from March through October, while others sold as many as 370, according to Fiat's Final Daily Sales Report for Nov. 1.
Olivier Francois, the Frenchman and former Chrysler brand chief who recently became global head of the Fiat brand, said a comparison of days supply is unfair with a new brand.
"A brand in the launch phase is not the same as a brand that has been around for 85 years," Francois said on the sidelines of the Los Angeles Auto Show, where Fiat unveiled the North American version of the Fiat 500 Abarth, a high-performance version of the two-door subcompact. The Abarth features a turbocharged 160-hp version of the 1.4-liter engine built in Dundee.
Sales of the 500 peaked at 3,106 units in August and fell below 2,000 in October. Francois attributes the fluctuation to the "seasonality" of the brand.
And sales of similar-sized cars aren't booming either. Through October, Mini sold 33,760 Coopers in the United States, down 12 percent from the same period of 2010. Sales of the Honda Fit are up 12 percent to 50,790 units.
Of the 130 Fiat stores in operation, 101 reported sales in October. Those 130 stores averaged 15 sales per franchise, according to the internal report, while Mini's 97 dealers averaged 56 sales per franchise and Honda's 1,034 dealers each averaged 3 sales of the tiny Fit.
Not enough marketing
Some dealers say Fiat was slow to give them marketing support to make customers aware of the car. This summer Fiat responded by increasing its advertising presence with a couple of TV spots, including one featuring Lopez, and beefing up its marketing and dealership teams with a couple of veteran Chrysler managers.
"I don't think we have a car problem; people love the car," Francois said in an interview with Advertising Age. "I think we have an awareness problem."
Dealer Rovny sold 57 units of the 500 from March through October. He said the 500 has generated sufficient interest among consumers, but perhaps not in the demographic that Chrysler targeted.
"We're finding a lot of the more established customers are buying them as third vehicles in the household, as opposed to the students and young people that Chrysler initially targeted," Rovny said. Reedman-Toll holds franchises for all Chrysler Group brands, as well as Chevrolet, Lincoln, Mazda, Subaru, and Jaguar, with the franchises side by side.
The Fiat 500's strongest markets are in California and the Southeast, according to the internal report. Dealers in the Midwest, from Ohio to Colorado, are experiencing the slowest sales rates, selling about 13 vehicles each in October, compared with dealers in California, who averaged almost 29 sales in October.
Although sales are well below Marchionne's original targets, Reid Bigland, Chrysler's lead U.S. sales executive, said the Fiat brand is helping Chrysler.
"Between Canada and the United States, we've sold close to 20,000 Fiats," he said. "Although maybe it's not a home run, it's very close to it -- a solid triple from my perspective. It's a product that has zero cannibalization of any other Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Ram product. It's purely incremental and has been a decent profit contributor to the sales organization. It depends on whether you look at the cup as half empty or half full. To me it's half full."

So the obvious response to the 500 landing in the U.S. with a giant thud is to "celebrate" its U.S. launch with a special edition emblazoned with obvious American motifs in a region that isn't particularly fond of the U.S.

Smart money still says there will be a hell of a lot more Minis driving around Bakersfield than 500s.
Debatable. With the nearest Mini dealer 2 hours away and with the Beetle and the 500 being readily available, the chances don't favor the Mini.
The Mini marketing model makes sense in large markets like Los Angles, but in smaller-but-sizable- markets like Bakersfield marketing Minis at BMW dealers (500s at Dodge dealers) makes a lot more sense.
The one MAJOR problem the 500 has is that it was NOT loved in NA. Hell the original Mini was a nothing here, but BMW created the sense that an icon was returning and that has been the genius of their approach.
Fiat has not done the same. Their celebrity spokesperson was also an idiot's choice.

Sometimes a company will do a 15 second commercial before someone else's 30 second commercial then follow with another 15 seconds. Imagine if the first 15 was all Italian and the second one--identical in every way--but in English. The "Italianness" of the Fiat 500 is NOT being marketed.
Imagine a commercial with the 500 in the middle of the screen getting passed by Ferraris and Maseratis with some self-deprecating line in the style of the iconic VW Beetle commercials of the 60s.
Their ads have done NOTHING to promote the fun and passion of the car. All the J-Lo commercial did was to make the car synonymous with old women with fat arses.
