I know there are a number of trucks and SUV's (feel free to list them), but in these days of super high gas prices, poor fuel economy, and hybrids that are geared for performance instead of fuel conservation (and which cost a major premium over regular cars); I would be very interested in Knowing which comanies offer Diesel powered cars for sale in the US.
Also, I am interested to know if its possible to import a diesel variant of a car that is already sold in the US. if so, does it make financial sense to do so?

yeah the E-class diesel has a 320 badge, so probably a 3.2 liter.
Then there is the VW Touareg 5.0L V10 diesel and smaller VW's with the 1.9L TDI.
mercedes e320 CDI (3.2 liter inline 6 - 201 hp/369lb-ft)
vw golf tdi (1.9 L - 100hp/177lb-ft)
vw jetta tdi (same)
vw new beetle tdi (same)
jeep liberty crd (2.8 liter 4-cyl unit from MB - 160hp/295lb-ft)
these models may not be sold new in california, maine, massachusetts, ny, or vermont because they do not meet emissions requirements.
previous generations of some of the cars (mb E300 turbodiesel, the last generation diesel engine in the vws) were legal for sale here, and are grandfathered in as permissable to re-sell even though they do not meet current requirements.
____
Santeno:
Importing a car is as you probably know, not easy and expensive. Basically, if you are importing a car that you could have theoretically bought in the united states, you are ok. But that 2001 BMW 320d is not okay - even if the car was sold here, the engine was not, and it has not passed emissions tests. You can pay to bring a car up to compliance, like Motorex does with the Nissan Skyline, but it is extremely time consuming and costly.
I have the specific legal details around my office somewhere, and can post them if you are interested.

Touareg V10 is gone, (mostly due to reliability)
In Canada you get Smart 3cyl CDI
Nearly all European manufacturers have indicated that their next gen diesels will come to NA in 2008.. so turbo BMW and Audi.
Just remember all these diesels achieve clean status by their particulate filter.. so ifyou ask about financial sense about importing them.. you sohuld find out how much they are to replace.. since if you use the current NA diesel they will clogg up faster.. and last I check those things are more expensive than gas cats.

Quote, originally posted by comRADe »

yeah the E-class diesel has a 320 badge, so probably a 3.2 liter.
Then there is the VW Touareg 5.0L V10 diesel and smaller VW's with the 1.9L TDI.

I thought the initial batch had a design fault in the head which caused a few catastrophic failure and they just decide not to bring in after the revision.
Basically they were selling like hotcakes at least in Canada

Quote, originally posted by phaeton »

I think you'll find its more to do with tough Emission rules than reliability.

I want a cheap diesel in stick. Only VW has it.
I wonder about the Dodge Caliber.

To be quite honest, I've always thought USA's anti diesel policies are ridiculous (as well as a few other automotive related policies). Glad to see that a few diesels are appearing though.
Santeno if you're considering one, the Liberty Diesel has an engine as good as they get and its fairly roomy, practical and if you ever feel like an odd trip out to the bush, it'll handle all you can throw at it

Damn, really? What strange law is that one now?

Yes I live in NYC, and sadly you are correct about not being able to buy one.
So let me get this straight then. At this point in time there are only 3 diesel powered cars or SUV's available to consumers in the american market?

Much like section 51 of the australian constitution protects the rights of state parliaments on certain issues, states in the us can set their own car regulatory laws so long as they are equal to or greater than the federal minimums. california, maine, massachusetts, ny, or vermont have set their own "environmentally conscious" emissions standards, and as such none of the diesels on sale in the US market are up to snuff for sale there.

I wish there were more diesel choices here at the stateside. I have a feeling people would fall in love with diesel once they get their hands on one (what are hybrids anyway ).

The next few years will see, as people have mentioned, many more diesel cars and SUVs available in the states. BMW, Audi, Dodge, VW, and Mercedes have all made clear their intentions to expand diesel offerings.
Many people believe that as low sulfur diesel fuel becomes available in the US in 2006-2007, emissions will reduce such that diesels will be eligible for sale in all 50 states. Since it's business, and business connected to oil, I'll believe it when I see it.

I believe every (at least almost) automaker has diesel variants already offered, at various markets...now it's time to bring 'em over here and to other markets not yet available

superfresa i agree with you 100%. Not just the Hummers and Vipers, but how about the commercial trucks with massive diesel engines and a smoke stack atop the cab?
I studied political economy when I was in college; it gives me a jaded - and sometimes even correct - perspective on the inefficiency of regulatory practice.

You can register the VW/Jeep diesels in Mass once they have done 7500 miles.
So much for emissions regs.
