35 year old Nürburgring record broken... by 51 seconds.

I'm not usually into timed laps, but this is absolutely stupid quick. The old record that was set in 1983 in a Porsche 956 was beaten by 51 seconds. Watch the video, it's like a flipping Scalextric car:

Times will keep dropping I feel slowly with more and more electric hybrids or even full electric supercars in the future taking to the ring.

Inded they will. Even rubber alone can make a huge difference, and the progress in tire technology should not be underestimated in respect to grip and a s a result to track times, but also tsiuff like accerlation or braking..

But I find it weird to compare to an old record, as the Ring has had a fair share of modifications since the early 80ies, so times can't be directly compared.

According to Wikipedia, there were several record attempts in recent years, none which cracked the 6:40 barrier. I think it shows more than anything that Le Mans prototypes are in a league way above anything that is street legal or even 'aspiring to race' (Ferrari FXX, Pagani Zonda R, etc.), but also makes me giddy with excitement since FIA is changing the rules for a new class to be allowed to race which is going to be based on hyper cars. I loved the MB CLK-GTR, Porsche GT1 and McLaren F1-LM(?) and all the other bonkers cars that were limited series homologations.
