Honda has revealed an all-new electric vehicle, the Honda Urban EV Concept, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept car is built on a completely new platform, and sets the direction for the technology and design that will appear on a future battery electric Honda production model.

The concept was officially introduced by Honda Motor Co. President and CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, during his press conference speech. "This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019," he added, confirming that the concept is set to be launched within two years.

Exterior design

Honda Urban EV Concept showcases advanced technology within a simple and sophisticated design. Its low and wide proportions give the car a planted, muscular stance that hint at sporty driving performance. Its compact proportions mean it has a total vehicle length 100mm shorter than the Jazz supermini.

The Honda emblem on the concept is backlit in blue, which previews a new styling feature for the company's future EVs. At the front of the car, interactive multilingual messages can be displayed between the headlights, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road, or charging status updates.

The exterior is quite lovely. Imagine a similar "Retro Golf Mk. 1 GTI"

If only Honda's production vehicles looked this cool...

The throwback to the first Civic is obvious here. Honda is incapable of building anything this simple and perfect in its styling. It would need a million lines and strange detailing like the CiviCord.

Wow, I didn't know I needed this in my life :-o

Yes, also reminded me a lot of the Golf Mk1, a lot more so than the first two Civic generations as mentioned above.
Imagine a next-gen Up! looking THAT good <3

If this was produced as the next gen Fit - it'd be a 100% winner. Doesn't need to be electric (but why not offer a variant of that to satisfy the direction most countries are headed).

Wow, very good looking. Much better car than the Mini EV Concept.

Modern retro, unlike the VW I.D. that is supposed the Beetle/Golf of tomorrow, this is clearly the Civi of tomorrow.

^^ This. Great points from posters about first gen Civic, but my first thought was first gen Golf.

Yes, it's nice. I liked the Gear concept from a few years ago more. I'm getting a 2009 vibe from this... It seems more official coming out at the largest auto show of the year. It doesn't look like any modern Honda though, so I have my doubts its aesthetic will ever see production.

A "2019 production version" is vague enough, but who knows.

I think the production version could be made in Swindon as there is a mothballed plant that could be used to build cars like this. Honda might have some plans for Swindon, possibly building the next gen ILX there?
