The problem with that statement is gearboxes like BMW's 7 speed SMG is actually a manual gearbox but with a electro hydraulic actuator.. oh thanks to electronics (that you say you hate so much).....

Actually Audi is moving away from FWD, most notably starting the new A5 platform where Quattro will have a bigger emphasis.. they are moving to counter their RWD rivals. Not to mention their engine...

I would assume transmission designers will pick reasonable spaced ratios for gearboxes. eg When you pick up a Hewland transmission, you have to pick the ratios you want for your applications.. even...
