Wink Is the new BMW 7 that good?

i first fell in love with the 7series when the e38 rolled up. There was nothing to hate about in that car, amazing proportions, understated elegance, great engine, no frill interiors and amazing ride. I promised myself, the day I get some money in my hands that I would get one, new or secondhand, it was a car to own.

And then BANG!...Chris Bangle shows up with his radical design that shared none of BMW's traits except for the dual kidney grills. Well, he maybe able to redeem himself calling it a new design direction but it just wasnt it. Even after years passed, the new 7series has rolled, it has lost his hunchback and it looks like a worthy successor to the e38 model. But, I dont think this is it. I dont think this is the model fit to be called the new 7series. In my view, the 7 was like a shark, if left alone, would pass by you without much ado, but with a ready to strike presence. That, that feel was the very essence of the BMW 7...and I dont think it has been captured successfully...

I feel that the 7 must go back a little in time, take up the E38 drawing board and outline a new model, a little boxy would do, give it a little LED flair, and mayb the bustleback wouldnt hurt, but really big kidney grilles, a forward stance for the nose...something amybe on the lines of the Estoque...but witha little more elegance...and I think it would be a car I want to buy.

But thats just me...what do you think?

moved to the right section, only threads regarding NEW cars are to be posted in the new cars section.

News goes into the industry news and rumours area

and anything else such as opinions or random car info goes in this area.

It's alright. I love older Bimmers, but the newer stuff doesn't do anything for me. I can live with it.

The design doesn't seem as 'pure' as it's predecessors, somehow.

...amazing proportions, understated elegance..., as you said about the E38.

Question Right On!

Ya...xactly...amazin proportions and understated elegance...

Maybe we should, atleast on a conceptual level, you know bring together `BMW fans and create an idea pool and try to recreate what the BMW 7 actually should look like...

Whaddya say ??

i think the 7er looks perfect. sporty and reserved. just like the last respectable model (E38). it's funny how BMW and Mercedes both went through an ugly phase together, BMW with the E65/66 and Mercedes with the W220, and then both seemed to create replacements that looked more like advances of the E38/W140 than the actual models they were replacing. as if they both said, "yup, we messed up, but lets forget that ever happened"

The new 7 in photographs appears bland and a huge leap backwards to atone for the sins of Bangleosity, BUT seeing it in the flesh and seeing in drive on the road, it has a rightness of line and proportion that--with the exception of the Bangle 7--the 7 series has always had. The pre-Bangle 7 series still looks good even today because its style was so rightly done that it transcends the flavor-of-the-moment styling. The Bangle 7 never looked right.

The 7 series historically has always reminded me of a Hugo Boss suit or a pair of Cole Haan shoes in the sheer stylishness of understatement that upon closer inspection is not so understated.

YA...i liked taht comparison to the HBoss, very true, and yes Bangleosity was a disease and he was the worm, but he did make a few things right before he left. The new 7 is the standing proof to that. Oh yeah, the Merc W220 faced the same fallout, but even the current model isnt exactly that beauty that you would expect, but nevertheless better.
