To my eye, it was an awkward design. I think it likely looked good as a design sketch. And I liked the CTS from that same generation. But the ELR had the (subjectively) fundamentally cheap proportions of a FWD, and I just don't think it's possible to make a FWD car look sleek (witness the VW CC, Arteon, and the first gen MB CLA). When you try to make a FWD look sleek, you end up w/ a strangely squished design that looks thick in the middle, IMHO.
And, of course, the price premium for the ELR just made it a non-starter.
A Cadillac that I do think was interesting was the XLR. Front end styling was a bit weird, but the rest of the exterior design was stylish and the bones were deceent. That interior, though (still a weak point for Cadillacs), and, of course, no one's going to outsell the MB SL.
