Sadly, I think there will be a next generation GT86. It needs to be euthanized.

The GT86 and the Miata have horrible sales.

So let's keep building the wheezer versions for the Captain Slows of the world who wish to wax poetic about balance and how power in a sports car isn't necessary.

But let's build "unbalanced" versions with 300-350 horsepower for the Captain Fasts of the world who value power and handling in their sports cars and watch sales double or triple.

To be honest, I'm very glad that these small sports coupes like these exist, despite their slow sales; A world where passion free accountants decide to build only the absolutely best selling cars would looks exactly like the Volkswagen group, a gazillion of identical looking FWD derived cross overs that mostly cannibalize each other. It+s always a relief in the streets when a coupe shows a up for a change;
Also, I have hardly ever seen a person in a Miata not smiling a bit....

Miata sales suck as itís a rare styling miss for Mazda. There are so many great renderings using the Kudo design language- itís stunning to me that they screwed it up. And yes, it could use more power, and itís too small....

The Miata has always sold at a trickle....always hobbled by not having a high power/excellent handling option to the standard asthmatic version. It's like Mazda has it in their heads that the MGB is the Holy Grail to emulate when the TR6 is the one you'd rather drive. I don't want to hear about the supposed Lotus inspiration.

The genre of miata/S2000/GT86....... its destined to evolve to become 100% electric personal commuter car during the week and weekend toy.

When the tech allows a light weight electric sports car, we wont be missing pistons as much. Light weight and electric are opposites... for now.
