I disagree with your idea to use grays before color.
Everyone who loves art usually knows how to shade accordingly...
If he's looking for some good effects, buy a cheap pack of Crayola watercolor markers, and some thick industrial carboard, and just test out there effects using water and a paint brush. The blend is simple and extremely effective.
I don't post alot of color on here, but you can see in this picture that watercolor markers can create a beautiful effect:
This was a sketch I was working on.
The style is up to date, and certainly looks professional.
Go for something like this, and guaranteed you'll love it.
