Default 2017 Kia Niro

The only significant debut at Chicago: http://www.autoblog.com/2016/02/11/k...-chicago-2016/

That's actually very clever. Instead of the "wannabe Prius" Hyundai Ioniq this takes (presumably) the whole tech and platform and puts a CUV hat on it. I guess this could be a big sales hit, if they price it right.

Car looks good, inside and outside, even if - like the Sportage - it has a "Mini Macan" flair....

I don't know how I feel, it's a bit blocky and the proportions are weird

Yup.

I want to like it...size seems right, MPG (if real) are impressive. But, it just looks odd. I wouldn't call it a crossover - more of a hatchback that they've decided to call a crossover b/c it's the envogue thing.

That whole lower section, from rubbing strip down, should be cladding or a contrasting paint.
As it is the eyes get drawn to the vast expanse of sheet metal on the flanks.

I agree that it has the potential to be a huge hit. I imagine it'll probably be around the size of a CX-5? That's a "just right" size for many people. Sounds like it'll be very, VERY slow, though (unless they were able to somehow make it very, VERY light).... 50MPG is impressive, though, as is the drag coefficient.

That would be the Sportage's size. All previous reports indicated that this is supposed to be smaller, but it doesn't look like it...so I honestly have no idea.

Autoblog said it'd be between Sorento / Sportage.

Niro's wheelbase is longer than the Sportage, but the overall length is shorter.

Kia Sportage:
Wheelbase: 105.1 in.
Length: 176.4 in.
Width: 73.0 in.
Height: 64.4 in.

Kia Niro:
Wheelbase: 106.3 in.
Length: 171.5 in.
Width: 70.9 in.
Height: 60.4 in.

Kia Sorento:
Wheelbase: 109.4 in.
Length: 187.4 in.
Width: 74.4 in.
Height: 66.3 in.

Also, despite looking like the Chinese-market KX3, the dimensions are very different:
Wheelbase: 102.0 in.
Length: 167.7 in.
Width: 69.5 in.
Height: 64.2 in.

Like its Sportage stablemate, the front end design is aesthetically challenged, but unlike Sportage, the rear has an awkward look to it. The remainder of the design is forgettable. A shame as (like others have pointed out), the concept is clever and has the potential to be a hit.
