Touareg sells very very in Europe. It is like a Cayenne, just cheaper. The new one will be like the Q7, but cheaper, and the Q7 is now the best SUV in the segment. The Atlas is FWD.

How do the Macan and Q5 sell in Europe? Here, in the U.S., there is essentially no price difference btw the Toureg, Macan, and Q5.

And that's the problem. Why have a WalMart brand name (VW) when you can drive a prestige brand?

Does it still. It sold well initially, when it was basically the cheapest European SUV back in ca. 2005, but nowadays i hardly see any new models around, no wonder, with a Q5 selling cheaper, a Macan in comparable regions (though the Macan is quite expensive in base price, given it already has a V6 and comparably good levels of equipment), and a VW dealer selling new a new Tiguan that looks similar and has comparable amounts of interior space (and thanks to being lighter, is as quick with way greener and more modern engines)

Both sell well, are a way more common sight than a current Touareg. Pricing, as said above, is similar, though a Q5 will be your cheapest option of the 3 (naturally, being an Audi means it#s easy to double it#s price in the configurator though)

Thanks for the info. This is why the VW group's attitude of having MULTIPLE overlapping models makes no sense to me. If you make the Q5 more luxurious and conservative and the Macan more sporty and flamboyant, then I think the class can accommodate both cars. But where does that leave the Toureg?
And, as swizzle mentions (or implies), the experience (from dealership to service to warranty work) will presumably be exponentially better (at least in the U.S.) w/ a Porsche or Audi.
Such a peculiar strategy....

Isn't MLB Evo (where the Q7 is based of, so the Touareg too) as FWD biased chassis in it's boens as well? AT least A4 and A6 base models (as is the Q5) are available in FWD shape.

Where is blazes did you get that crazy notion?
The Touareg is NOT and was never RWD based. Which RWD car is it based on? NONE!
The Touareg was designed from the outset as an AWD platform.

Let me put it in more basic terms. Touareg has a longitudinal engine (typically used by RWD or RWD BIASED AWD set ups)
Learn to read. I said BIASED, not BASED.
A Touareg left to it's own devices sends the majority of its power to the rear wheels.
Atlas has a transverse engine, typically used by FWD and FWD biased set ups.
