So Skoda is producing a Seat Ateca which is the size of a Yeti, looks like a Skoda deisgn wise and is priced where the Yeti is, yet VW decides it's better to rebadge the larger, much more expensive (and less Skoda-ish) Tiguan which is much closer in size to the upcoming Kodiaq, which everyone was actually expecting to slightly undercut the TIuguan price wise despite being longer, just like Superb vs. Passat.

Clearly not only FCA is taking interesting model decisions...

Couldn't have said it better myself. This car is a questionable marketing decision to say the least. The Tiguan was not selling good so far, so now it will be basically doomed. More so if Skoda manages to put some nice headlights on it.

This article provides a theory for the decision:

But probably cost cutting as the originally posted article theorized is also a factor. Yeti is one of Skoda's poorest sales performers.

This doesn't make the least of sense to me, it is also WAY too big for the Yeti crowd (I actually know a number of people who don't consider the new Tiguan because it grew so much).
I still think the new Yeti will be based on the Ateca, nothing else makes sense as Mike also put it above (Skoda style sheet metal and other design details).
I suppose this is just a mule for a 5 seater version of the Kodiaq (which makes a lot more sense).

I first thought mule too, and that the site is wrong. But it looks too refined for a mule (plus then they could use the Tigaun without a different grille anyway, or just leave two seats out of a Kodiaq), including bespoke wheels not form VW.

But, looking closely, it is RHD, could this be some India only Skoda, given they also get the Polo sedan as Skoda Rapid instead of a proper Skoda Rapid? Because in any other case it really makes no sense (that said, selling the VW versions of Skodas as Skoda in India makes very little sense too...)

Is Skoda really planning on just rebadging the Tiguan?
