Hrm...I'm hoping at this point that it is very much in the mule stage.

The front end looks like it's lifted from the Legacy/Outback and those taillights look like they're from the facelifted Forester.

Interesting to see that they're testing alongside the CX-9 and the Explorer. CX-9 I get, given it's recent redesign...but I don't understand why they're benchmarking it with an Explorer given the age of the underpinnings (P2 to D3 to D4) and a design that's been on sale since 2010...

Maybe it is a mule but hard to dell if the lights are just put in place as placeholders or part of the final design. The boxy design feels boring compared to the CX-9. Hopefully they will use another name other than Tribeca.

Just a hunch, but...I'm guessing that research showed satisfaction with the Explorer's ride. These vehicles aren't built for auto crossing, but for comfort so the age of the Explorer's platform isn't that much of a big deal and obviously not what they would be benchmarking.

Maybe they can steal Teremont from VW.

The Explorer was America's second best selling midsize SUV last year.

This looks more like close to end of development testing against current competition. Surprised not to see the Pilot and Highlander there as well.

There will be howls but I see the age of the 3.5/3.6 V6 three row SUV going away. To be replaced by 2.0 to 2.5 turbo with 8-9 speed auto boxes. Mazda has shown the way.

Apparently, it will be called the Ascent:

Eh, not bad. A pretty generic name but I'll support it. I personally never minded Tribeca either (it was "B9 Tribeca" I took issue with), although I understand why they'd not want to reuse it (then again, FCA brought Pacifica back).

Hoping we get some VIZIV Future Concept influences in production form:

If the concept's styling is hiding under all that camo, then nice how they hid it, but I feel it won't be as exciting as the concept.

Ascent makes me think "ass scent" just like Ascender made me think of "ass ender". The closeness with Accent is also troubling. Sojourn was even worse given its definition. Venterra actually wasn't half bad, but this is Subaru, so...
