Saw similar/same pics on Car and Driver. And, like you, for the life me, I thought I was looking at a CLS. I assume the notchback truck is clever camo.

The C&D article states that the next CLS will be slanted more toward the luxurious (vs. sporty) end of the spectrum. Which makes me wonder why it's needed at all w/ the E-Class sedan and coupe, but....

It probably is a CLS with different styling. That would make tremendous sense.

As both cars are based of the E-Class, this is quite true actually. Also, it does seem that probably a lot of "under sheet metal structures" will be shared specifically with the CLS too....

Looks like a CLS hatchback (which it technically also is); Altogether I guess this will replace the CLS Shooting break as well, of which I have hardly ever seen an example...

Agreed, better utilization of the vehicle in rapid transitions if one can actually see out of it from multiple directions.
