Mercedes now defending themselves for their same-sausage, different length design approach:

I suppose on one hand, the "Russian doll" approach creates brand identity, but it also creates another problem. The minute the lead vehicle in the design language is replaced, the remaining ones instantly look old. To my way of thinking a styling language should have identifiable elements that unite the products and which allows the products of evolve one-by-one rather than having the trailing models suddenly look old as the look is replaced by the lead car.

Agreed, usually followed by half assed updates with new nose grafted uncomfortably onto an old body

I'm okay with it to a certain extent. The design of C-Class and E-Class is apparently very aerodynamic. To produce a design like that presumably takes a lot of development time, so why not spread it around? And the sedans were all introduced in consecutive yrs. 30-40 yrs ago, the model had 10 yr life spans, and a new model would only come out very few yrs (so designers presumably had time to develop a new design language and to integrate that into upcoming models in a more organic way).

Also, at least the new design language is nice (IMHO). It's sort of like complaining about Aston Martins all looking the same. The criticism is absolutely deserved, and, yes, it's kind of predictable and boring, but at least they all look GOOD.

There was also a time when you could reliably predict that a new model would look BETTER. That time has long passed, so I'm sort of fine w/ not seeing the latest weird cuts and angles so that auto brands can show how sophisticated their manufacturing process is....

E43 announced.

The 150hp gap btw the base model and this mini-AMG version seems kind of huge. Wonder if they'll offered a detuned version as an E400 (and w/o the ridiculous contrast stitching and Alcantara inserts)?

The "standard" version sets the design standard in this class.

The T-Model (estate)

http://www.carscoops.com/2016/06/new...ss-estate.html

Yes, looks like a C-Class estate, but at least, good looking and tasteful design in and outside (apart form the massive tablet that seems to dominant as instruments, but that is shared with teh sedan)
