Default 2018 Mazda CX-5

Very Jaguar-esque:

Looks to be very evolutionary. Given I'm not enamoured by the current CX5, I can't say I'm particularly enthused by what I'm seeing so far.

Looks great so far, much more mature and refined than the current design. Hopefully it has the CX-9 interior. Love that wooden feature underneath the stickshift.

Curious to see if they decide to revive the CX-7 now too, as a coupe-suv which would make sense as it is all the rage at the moment

I suppose it all depends on Mazda's strategy. Remaining independent indefinitely is an impossibility, thus the choices are (1) be absorbed by Toyota or (2) become a good merger partner.

I shudder to think about the excellence that could happen if FCA merged with Mazda and let Mazda call the shots.

It won't be as nice as the CX-9, but hopefully it will be similar. The current CX-5's interior is ok but compared to the rest of Mazda's lineup is a bit blah.

The outside looks good, side surfacing more like the CX-3 and a front similar to the CX-9 (the chrome trim intersecting with the headlights reminds me of the rear of the CX-9, actually). I'm looking forward to seeing the end result.

The problem is neither Mazda nor FCA has any significant experience in electrification. FCA is very behind, and Mazda has nil. And in autonomous vehicles, both companies are pretty much behind everyone, and neither has the cash to make the necessary pushes forward.

It actually looks closer to the original concept than the current car.
