What? Do you honestly think someone interested in a Miata would cross shop with a Golf (or visa versa)?

What are you smoking??

GTI is a nightmare to good taste, and the worst of music can be heard from them. And I saw an old lady in a brand new one cut off a dump truck the other day. In the back of the car was a caged animal.

If I'm driving a GTI, I'm smoking Miatas in the straight line and the curves to boot.

That may be, but the Miata could learn a lot about performance from a GTI

If you're talking performance and handling, the Miata is desperately lacking in BOTH areas.

I'm just going to say that I think both a hot hatch as a lightweight, small roadster can be very good in their own right, but need not to compete head on necessarily everywhere. Even if the MX5 was less good than it is, I would still very much welcome an updated version over the 347th VAG Cross over with the same design or any other marketing driven car with very little interesting about them (same goes for a Golf GTI, especially if VW would just make one proper GTI instead of more and more special versions where you don#t know anymore which GTI is currently the one to have, kind of a GTI Mk. V moment again...)

Miatas are for old men who want something sporty to park next to their base Camrys.

Golf GTI is FWD. FWD s*cks hairy monkey balls. FWD ≠ Handling

While there might be some truth to this statement (the one person I know how owns a Miata also has a Lexus ES350, BTW.... ;) ), there's nothing fundamentally wrong w/ a car that appeals to a wide variety of ages and isn't the best option as primary transport or an only car.... The Miata isn't about performance. Hell, the current Camry and Accord, when equipped properly, pull skidpad numbers that were only attainable by sports-car ~10 yrs ago.

There is a place, esp in today's automotive landscape where nearly everything pulls very impressive numbers, for a car that emphasizes subjective driving enjoyment, IMHO.
