There were many updates to the 500 that were needed before it entered the US which trickled down to the ROW model.

Even though looking fundamentally identical on the outside since 10 years, the 500 has - unlike some other small cars or Fiat products that look the same for many years - actually indeed receive a few running updates under the skin, including some structural upgrades both after the Panda/US model as well as engines and infotainment and other electric updates.

I've heard that as well, though that is not so unusual with very small or light cars give US crash tests differ form say European ones. But it also appears later ROW models are heavier than the launch edition/early versions, so likely some of the structural upgrades were quietly added to the whole range as well..
