Default VW considering the WRC

Apparently VW wants to join the WRC in 2012 or continue on with Rally Raid. This decision will be made in March of next year. VW has Carlos Sainz and other former rally drivers to help with development with their WRC program. VW would likely do it in house and could very well use the Scirocco. VW does want more prestigious events like the Monte Carlo and possibly Safari. VW also wants more manufacturers to join. Then again they're looking into supplying engines to F1 teams.

VW has the Polo which can be converted to a 1.6L WRC car. In 2011 all WRC cars will move to a 1.6Turbo. VW also wants the WRCars to have paddle shifters so they can promote their DSG technology. I believe the cars will be Super 2000 based but will have 1.6Turbo engines. The WRcars will have more power but all new S2000 cars homologated after 2011 will need to have a 1.6Turbo and not a 2.0L n/a engine. Martin Prokop said that the Fiesta S2000 can be converted to 2011 WRC specs.

Mini is working with Prodrive for a future WRC team. Subaru could join the WRC if they sell enough cars. Subaru would probably have to use a different car prep company as Prodrive will likely be with Mini.

Citroen's next WRCar will be the DS3.

Citroen Team Boss Olivier Quesnel said that VW would return to the WRC in 2012 and that Prodrive will come back in 2011 with a new manufacturer.

The new World Engine will be used in both WTCC and the WRC. It will be a 1.6L Turbo I4 with a 33mm restrictor. Boost will be limited to 2.5 bar and an FIA control box will be installed to make sure the teams aren't cheating. The 1.6Turbo will not be a spec engine. It's a set of rules that teams use to build their engines With VW joining in 2012 it will be quite a competitive championship.

The Scirocco might not be VW's WRCar since they have the Golf and Polo. I've also heard that the Scirocco is too wide for the WRC so they have to use either the Golf or Polo. Polo seems to be the most likely choice as there is a S2000 version of it. The S2000 cars will form the basis of the next gen WRCars. The new 1.6Turbo engines will be just as exciting as the current ones and will likely be just as quick within a few years. The Monte Carlo Rally could come back but only under their terms.

VW could very well continue with Rally Raids and build another Race Touareg off the next gen model. I think they'll try the WRC though and let Skoda compete in the IRC.

I guess VW can use their racing DSG in the WRC as they've now allowed for semi automatic gearboxes.

There are now new rumors of VW entering the WRC and the WTCC. This new 1.6T is also compatible with the WTCC.

They're already sweeping WTCC with the SEAT Leon...why would they enter a VW team too?

VW wouldn't make a good team in the WRC as their ego's would prevent them from winning. Skoda would be a better team as they are now under new management which are very passionate about Rallying. The Fabia S2000 is very successful in the IRC and they are developing a WRC version since all WRCars after 2011 will have to be based on Super 2000 cars. Then again, the new regs also call for paddle shift gearboxes, full electronic upgrades, and water cooled brake calipers on certain events.
