Bringing new sophistication to the compact car segment, the all-new Ford Escort offers elegant design, exceptional roominess and refined craftsmanship to appeal to discerning modern families in China.

Ford's market research revealed that there is a sub-group of Chinese consumers in the compact car segment who are looking for a sedan that is stylish without appearing arrogant or pretentious, one that fits comfortably into a balanced life with family and friends.

The Ford Asia Pacific design team in Australia worked together with Ford's Research and Engineering Center in Nanjing to meet this market need with the Ford Escort, combining Ford's global capabilities with its knowledge of the Chinese market.

"The Ford Escort offers a premium aesthetic without sacrificing important features like rear-seat space and practicality for everyday use," said Andrew Collinson, exterior design manager, Ford Asia Pacific. "Combining our global strength and local expertise, we've created a compact sedan that defies expectations for this segment with a clean, harmonious and sophisticated design."

It looks good - loses very little compared to the concept. The proportions are surprisingly old-fashioned, I suppose because it's based on the previous-gen Focus more than the new one.

The interior is interesting. I like the design, which seems much airier than the Focus'. It's interesting that it still has the phone dial-like controls, which Ford is moving away from going by the Edge and S-Max concepts as well as spy shots of lower-end 2015 Foci. The steering wheel is a bit curious too, it looks like a mix of the US and EU-spec Fiestas. The screens for the radio and instrument cluster are very basic, which I guess reflects how this is positioned below the Mk3 Focus, and I suppose the expectation is that there's no need for fancier screens when drivers will just mount a smartphone on the dash.

Overall, this is quite nice and I'm sure it will do well for Ford. It's sure to eat into Mk2 Focus sales, though, which means the Focus could very well lose its world bestseller title because of it.

Looks like they took the typical modern Ford interior but removed pretty much all the digital stuff. Consumer Reports would love it.

With the new Focus, the Focus' cheaper Chinese cousin also receives a facelift.

Front end more in line with the recent Fiesta and Focus, plus updated instruments and (supposedly fake) stitching on the dash. Lack of rear pics suggests not much work has been done their. Other updates include the availability of the 1.0 EcoBoost engine and their new 1.5 Ti-VCT engine, both with either 6 speed auto or manual.

With the Focus production shifting to China anyway for the US, it makes you wonder whether this would be a credible entry level Ford for the US as well instead of the Fiesta, in addition to the EcoSport. Looks certainly better than a Nissan Versa. and given it's based of the Mk. II (Euro/Global non US) Focus, it also should drive better.
