I think this looks great. It's been a long time coming and, yes, is virtually identical exterior-wise...but I'm a fan.

Agreed. Also, I like the interior. Looks nice.

One of the few cases where making the brand-new model look exactly like the old model makes complete sense. This thing has been a cash cow for MB, so it was important that they not f*ck it up. And it looks like they didn't. Modern crash standards/electronic + old-skool appearance = sales hit.

Surprised the last-gen touchpad is being used, though (not that any of their buyers will care).

2018 G Wagon now as capable off-road as the 2008 Land Cruiser, just without Toyota reliability.

But is it literally a clean-sheet design or is it just the old one tarted up?

Mercedes did a good job in making the exterior look the same.

Swizz, itís all new. Compare the top door frame corners between the two and youíll see they are more rounded on the new one. The chassis is new, the body is new and obviously the interior is new. The body is actually wider than before.

As bruhbruh said, all-new:

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews...pe-ride-review

Overall width is up > 2 inches, but the track is nearly 5 inches (!!!) wider. One assumes that MB couldn't continue to massage the old chassis to make it conform to modern crash standards, compatible w/ future electronics, or less dangerous to drive....

Smart move. The person in charge of the exterior redesign has the easiest job in the world.

This is what a lot of manufacturers don't get. They're great doing the "retro inspired looks," like VW, Hummer, all the American muscle cars... but that doesn't have legs. It's cute for a cycle at most. This is legit old-school, appearance-wise.
