Default 2018 BMW 8 Series

First pictures of the next generation BMW 6 series:

I believe this is not the new BMW 8 series as currently claimed by the media. Looking at the shape and dimensions it is obvious that this cannot be the a competitor for an Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe or a Bentley Continental GT successor.

Instead it is the new BMW 6 series Coupe appearing in 2018. The car will actually be more compact and therefore much lighter and sportier compared to the current generation. The car will be based on the BMW CLAR matrix which is also underneath the new BMW 7 series and the next generation 5 series appearing at the beginning of 2017.

According to my sources the next generation 6 series will only appear as a coupe and a convertible. The current BMW 6 series Gran Coupe will have a much more upmarket successor which might be part of the new BMW luxury strategy.

This is looking extremely good proportions-wise. Not that the current gen is bad to that respect, but this could be a noticeable improvement if they get the detailing right. On the other hand, the rear seats will be much more cramped, or so it seems. I read rumors that BMW wanted something to face the 911 on its own game, and seeing these pictures i wonder if they have gone that way with the 6er.

It might just be me, but those shots make it look larger than the current 6er, not smaller.

Well given the 6/8 series (whatever this is) is supposed to move upmarket, making it smaller would make little sense. That said I think the proportions are quite dramatic and quite a departure from the very cautious attempt seen on the 7 series and upcoming 5 series....

Right, I was just responding to Vantage's assessment that this was more compact than the current gen.

Front overhand seems surprisingly long (although maybe just the angle). Very rakish, but kind of bland.

Hard to say how large it is until we get a better view of it standing next to another car to get a better judgement on size.

I don't need to see the new 6 Series, cheap engineered product. I already know I prefer an underpowered Lexus LC over any BMW.
