Well apparently, it looks like there will be a 2.0T 4 cylinder option:

That said, this would be the first Supra to have a 4 pot...even though this bridges the gap from the 86, it seems a little off.

Yes, but the last Supra was released 25 years ago, a lot has changed since then, and, tbh., this Supra isn't even in the same segment as the original Supra, more where a Celica would be, comparing to the market (power output is more in the super hot hatch region than proper Sports car, and then I'm not even talking about being based of a small coupe/convertible); Anyway, if you want a Supra with a inline six, there will be one.

personally I think that the pricing, if the indications are correct, will be more of a problem.

Really? In the US, the last Celica was a cheap but pleasant car.... Emphasis on being relatively cheap.

I had assumed the new Supra would be more of a Boxster or F-Type competitor.

I meant size wise, and kind of power wise too; The Celica was a regular coupe, in the power range of a hot hatch; segments have moved on considerably power wise, whilst the Supra will have similar levels of power as the old car, so nowadays that would more be a Celica, actually; F_Type is probably a similar product, meaning that it's price is in a different segment than people might perceive the car;

While engines can be tired to a model, a car is rarely built around a specific engine layout. M3 had an oddball V8, first one was I4. M5 had an oddball V10, first one was I6. Mustang usually was a V8, even of they sold I6, V6 and even I4 in 3 of 6 generations only. Nissan GT-R was I6, then V6.

The Supra was I6, the I4 "Supra" was called Celica. Only after the A60 did Supra and Celica become different cars, RWD I6 and FWD I4.

This Supra is neither a old Supra nor an old Celica, it has only two seats. It is Toyota's sports car, that is the only thing in common and valid.

Rumor of a BMW 4 cyl is has been about for a while.

Still wondering about a manual option anywhere in the lineup.

IIRC, there was a heavily powerful 4 cylinder BEAMS supra 4th gen... for racing.

I saw this car live...no excitement at all. It has nothing that makes you turn your eye on it. I didn't have much expectation about it anyway. I think it will be a glorified GT86 with a hugely steep price.
