Pretty sure the cross over terminology is used just because it sounds §fresher" and more youthful, outdoorsy and all that other marketing bs that is associated with that type of cars, that helps sell estates and hatchbacks with a bit of unpainted plastic parts (cheaper) and standard ride hieght instead of a lowered "sport suspension" (used to be an expensive option in the 90ies and 00s) at higher prices.
