There are worlds in terms of structural rigidity, crash performance and the suspension (when equipped with IRS) or available safety tech or autonomous stuff. The Mlk. IV, whilst generally highly regarded for it#s build quality (IMO the one golf that really was in a different class than the rest of it's segment in that respect) or - in Europe at least - back then good TDI engines, the chassis was never it's strong point, regarded as okay, not a deal breaker, but most did it better.
Where there really is much less of a difference iis the PQ35 (the Mk. V/VI) and MQB. Drive a Mk. Vi Golf next to a Mk. VII, not that much, but one can definitely feel the nearly 20 years between PQ34 and MQB.
