What i used to do back in my 'shop days was this (please forgive my limited chopping skills):

- first select all the coloured areas
- then remove all colour saturation, getting an all-grey colour
- if there were different colours at the beggining, you might want to adjust the brightness of each ara, but this is optional
- Once you have a regular shade of grey, add the hue and saturation you want. As you want black, probably you can do it by just adjusting the brightness and contrast from the grey shade. The result should be fine.

Of course you should know all this and you want an more advanced technique. Anyway, i hope it helps you.

Back in my P-shop days changing colour and shades was my biggest problem.
That is one of the reasons i stopped photoshopping, it was to frustrating not getting it the way i want it.

i use "Levels" quite a bit when changing colors/densities. (apple L) you can use it for the overall color, or choose a channel, and then shadows, midtones and highlights.

Hey Theo sorry about hte late response but what i usually do is select the bits you want to recolour, and the desaturate it. Then use the "Variations" function and select "Darker" until the shade you want is achieved. Its also great at changing dark colours to white. Thats what i usually use to do colour changes.

this is why i love photoshop so much. there are a hundred ways to do anything you want to do. I've been working in it since the early '90s, and still find new ways to make it work for me. i really like reading how other people use it too.

for darkening/lightening pieces, you can also duplicate the selections on multiple layers, and then play around with their opacity and transparency settings.
