Apparently not any more. MS has started to cancel subscriptions to their online gaming network if their servers detect any mods on your machine. Apparently if you mod it and they catch you, you are banned for life.

damn, i dont have one so it doesent matter; but that sucks - did it happen to you or someone you know?

It would be a lot easier to mod if the set-up was more PC-like. I opened mine up after it broke. Fixed it eventually, but the thing is one big chip. Everything is fused together

Nope, there was an article about it on the times. According to them their reasoning is that they want all users to have an even playing field (yeah right).

most popular mod allows you to read burned dvds on the x-box; looks like they were snuffing it out

actually, I do have a modded xbox, its got a mod chip in it and an upgraded 300 gig hard drive, the mod chip pretty much allows you to burn anything and play anything through the built in OS, from movies, to pictures, to music, I even have ps2, gamecube, and atari games on there as well as xbox titles...at the moment i have about 80 xbox titles on my box...there was a scare for a little while about microsoft banning accounts, but luckily I have found a way around that

That sucks man. Just be glad you're getting a new one for free

I've heard that PS2's have bad reliability after a year or so, that they always say disk read error and stuff

Mine's holdin up fine after about...2 or so years? But I guess that's due to the fact that I haven't played it in about a year.
