2008 Detroit Auto Show Preview: NAIAS Announces Introductions, Including Small Ford Concept

DETROIT This may be the week for the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show to take center stage, but that didn't stop the organizers of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show from trotting out their scheduled introductions for the January event. At the top of the list is a new small concept from Ford that the company says hints at its "new design direction for future compact cars."

The company said it intends to gauge public reaction to its proposed "supermini generation," a vehicle segment Ford is betting will take off in global markets. The Ford Verve concept is a crossover that has a smaller platform than the Ford Focus. The Detroit concept will feature a different body.

Mazda will use the Detroit stage for the debut of a new, unnamed concept car that is described as taking its "Nagare design theme to its 'most realistic level yet.'" Previous Nagare concept cars include the Ryuga and Hakaze concepts shown earlier in 2007.

Mitsubishi plans two worldwide debuts on a concept car and another production car. NAIAS said details on the Mitsubishi vehicles will be available in December.

Subaru plans a global debut in Detroit, while Mercedes-Benz will hold the worldwide debut of a new production model. Details are being withheld on both of those vehicles.

Kia has scheduled the worldwide debut of an SUV code-named HM. The seven-passenger vehicle is derived from the Mesa concept and is slated for production in the 2009 model year. Hyundai will unveil the production version of its flagship 2008 Genesis sedan.

What this means to you: Expect Detroit show debuts to continue to be released as the new year approaches.

I've heard Mitsu was coming out with a new Galant next year so I'm guessing thats the production car they're showing. We'll have to see if that concept from Tokyo previewed anything.

I'm surprised Ford is showing a concept of their B-segment car already, has Ford finally decided to take some action and come out with their cars faster..

I don't think the B-seg ford car is an actual production car, probably some kind of a concept, perhaps even more production ready than the verve concept? it might also be a smaller cabrio model? as it mentions a different body. again could also be a new small suv or something entirely different.

whatever it will be, should be a nice surprise.

something tells me the mazda concept is the new mazda 3, all the concepts before it hinted at some small hatch with the size and shape similar to the 3.

subaru could debut the new forrester? or something else?

the merc could be either the new SL remade, or the black series SL or the small C class coupe that is testing, or possibly the CLK. :P

regardless should be a good show.

Any word of the GM Zetas; production Camaro, concept form of Impala, or any Zeta for Buick and Cadillac? Also, the production C6 Corvette ZR1 is expected to appear soon. What about the production Dodge Challenger? Also, a production Lincoln MKS is on deck to appear soon, also expected is a Lincoln version of the Flex (which is expected to be an edition which is lesser of a clone to a related Ford product).
Are any of these vehicles expected for Detroit NAIAS, or a following show such as Chicago, Geneva, or New York? Does anyone know any information?

chevy is probably gonna have a field day at detroit with the ZR1, camaro production, i would assume a concept impala, and probably an updated volt.
the challenger is debuting at chicago
MKS will probably be either at detroit or chicago with the crossover debuting at some show this year (maybe ny?)

I keep forgetting about the glk, not sure why, could be that it's been testing so long and the design could be too generic for a mb.

clk would make more sense at geneva with the coupe and convertible for the summer driving season.

Chevy does look to have it's hands full, and that's a good thing! I hope you're correct.

What interests me regarding the Lincoln version Flex-based crossover is that it's been mentioned that it's an effort where Ford will not closely clone a Flex, and let it have a more unique Lincoln design language. Of course, the architecture and hard-points will be identical. It should have even greater differences than the Edge and MKX. I understand that this was originally supposed to be a Mercury, but they eventually gave it to Lincoln. I'd like to see how this is handled, and yes, I was impressed this the Flex when I saw it at NYIAS in New York last spring.

Any other GM Zetas up for this year other than Chevy and of course the production Pontiac G8?

No a Mercury version was never planned. Mercury was supposed to get the Freestyle but instead Ford got the TaurusX.

You're absolutely correct, the Taurus X (nee Freestyle) was supposed to originally migrate to Mercury to become the production Meta-One; there were even mule sightings to further prove this, but this was later nixed and the Freestyle was updated to become the Taurus X. Ford was evidently getting the production version of the Fairlane concept, which became the Flex and the then-Freestyle was to leave Ford division and become a Mercury. A clear, undisguised shot of a Meta-One mule was shown after this fact. Bottom line: original plans did call for the then-Freestyle to be dropped from Ford division and become a Mercury, and likely make room for the upcoming Flex.

I saw a recent article (which I will look for) stating that a Flex variant was originally going to be made for Mercury, but that was pulled and now it's being developed in to a Lincoln.

If you stop and think, even the MKX could have been a Mercury. Even though the CEO recently stated that "Mercury is doing well", Mercury seems starved for product with no new generations planned for existing models and no development apparently in the works for new, additional models. Perhaps Mercury will eventually fade away as did Oldsmobile, once the products reach the end of their life-cycles. Lincoln seems to be picking up the slack, even though it's Mark LX (if that's what it's called) F-series pick-up variant is being canceled, but the Platinum edition of the next-generation F-series will take it's place.

Another anticipation of the D3-based MKS and Lincoln Flex variants the application of the new engines, the mentioned 3.7L V6 and the first application of Twin-Force in the MKS. The MKS looks to be a more modern, elegant take in the D3 platform, larger than it's Taurus and Sable siblings with a more contemporary, up-swept greenhouse and 20" wheels on higher trim levels. The MKS near-production concept at the 2006 NYIAS did impress in person. I don't know as of yet if these two Lincoln D3 models will premiere in Detroit NAIAS, or in Chicago or New York.
