Post Ford & Volkwagen partnership - 3rd times a charm

What are we expecting people?

My guess

-obviously a mid size pickup for (Winner VW entry to USA) possibly this is next generation Amarok / Ranger

-next generation Caddy and Transit Connect to be shared platforms (Winner both companies) cheaper cost for development etc.

-electric mobility (Winner Ford) possible MEB tech sharing???

After the 1990s JVs of AutoLatina and AutoEuropa, America and Germany are in bed together again :)

I think the Ranger as Amarok has already been more or less confirmed, and certainly the archaic Caddy (released some 15 years ago) will need a replacement in not too far future; Technically, the VW Transporter (and whatever the large, ex Sprinter version is called now)and Ford Transit are the only not badge engineered vans in Europe together with Mercedes (now not rebadging the Sprinter anymore), so a bit of component sharing won't hurt I guess;

MEB would make sense, it is after all a huge step, other cars, well, let's see. It could certainly make sense to use say the new Explorer as a base for a range topping VW SUV (MQB can only stretch so far in terms of engines and tech)....

Transporter - I will say is a very strong German brand and can guarantee the Unions will make sure there is no collaboration with any brand.

Crafter - Transit - not yet as both are newish.

We will find out tomorrow I guess. I was hoping this would not go forward as I wanted VW to build the Atlas Tanoak pickup, that concept has been a screensaver for the better part of last year.
I gather Ford will take the lead in producing a pickup and VW with Caddy replacement.

SO is the Transit name, a pretty old and strong brand; But it doesn't mean that they need to build it at a Ford plant (what the unions would care about), but say a co-developed chassis, or engines, and each built at their own plant, is hardly something unions would be nervous about; Making the Golf a reskinned Focus would be much more of an uproar...

Elsewhere, this is being reported as a virtual merger with platform sharing and ultimately design sharing.

Press release from Volkswagen.

Volkswagen and Ford launch alliance

Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Company today announced the first agreements in a broad alliance that positions the companies to boost competitiveness and better serve customers in an era of rapid change in the industry.

Volkswagen CEO Dr. Herbert Diess and Ford CEO Jim Hackett confirmed that the companies intend to develop commercial vans and medium-sized pickups for global markets beginning as early as 2022. The alliance will drive significant scale and efficiencies and enable both companies to share investments in vehicle architectures that deliver distinct capabilities and technologies.

The companies estimate the commercial van and pickup cooperation will yield improved annual pre-tax operating results, starting in 2023. In addition, Volkswagen and Ford have signed a memorandum of understanding to investigate collaboration on autonomous vehicles, mobility services and electric vehicles and have started to explore opportunities. Both companies also said they were open to considering additional vehicle programs in the future. The teams will continue working through details in the coming months.

“Over time, this alliance will help both companies create value and meet the needs of our customers and society,” Hackett said. “It will not only drive significant efficiencies and help both companies improve their fitness, but also gives us the opportunity to collaborate on shaping the next era of mobility.”

Diess added: “Volkswagen and Ford will harness our collective resources, innovation capabilities and complementary market positions to even better serve millions of customers around the world. At the same time, the alliance will be a cornerstone for our drive to improve competitiveness.”

The alliance, which does not entail cross-ownership between the two companies, will be governed by a joint committee. This committee will be led by Hackett and Diess and will include senior executives from both companies.

Commercial van and pickup collaboration

Ford and Volkswagen both have strong commercial van and pickup businesses around the globe, with popular nameplates such as the Ford Transit family and Ranger as well as the Volkswagen Transporter, Caddy and Amarok.

The companies’ collective light commercial vehicle volumes from 2018 totaled approximately 1.2 million units globally, which could represent the industry’s highest-volume collaboration as production scales.

Demand for both medium pickups and commercial vans is expected to grow globally in the next five years. The alliance will enable the companies to share development costs, leverage their respective manufacturing capacity, boost the capability and competitiveness of their vehicles and deliver cost efficiencies, while maintaining distinct brand characteristics.

Through the alliance, Ford will engineer and build medium-sized pickups for both companies which are expected to go to market as early as 2022. For both parties, Ford intends to engineer and build larger commercial vans for European customers, and Volkswagen intends to develop and build a city van.

-Looks like Ford may do next generation Transporter (shocked face) and or Crafter development.
-Caddy to be developed by VW
-Ranger / Amarok to be developed by Ford.

If VW had brains, they would leverage the Explorer for a Touareg replacement in the USA with a different name that sits at the high end of the Altas's price band and then move the Atlas to a very value orientation.
