Top Gear presenter Hammond out of intensive care

Doctors treating Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond said today that his condition had improved enough for him to be moved out of intensive care.
Hammond is now said to be in a "stable" condition following his high speed crash in a jet-powered car that is being investigated by police and health and safety officials.

A spokesman at Leeds General Infirmary said: "Doctors say Richard Hammond is making satisfactory progress. This morning he has been moved from intensive care on to a high dependency unit.
"His condition has been downgraded from serious but stable to stable."

Family and friends, including Hammonds co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson, are keeping a bedside vigil for the 36-year-old, who suffered a "significant brain injury" in Wednesday afternoons accident at Elvington Airfield, near York.

Well that's great news indeed! I'm a little confused by his status though...is he conscious, or in a coma, or what? Or is there not enough information yet?

Hes concious, May and Clarkson have talked to him a bit already. What their not certain is how much brain damage he has suffered. These types of things usually take time to figure out what the damage will be.

Overall slower functioning (movements, speech, etc.) or problems with short/long term memory are two examples, but the doctors or anyone else hasn't brought up the possibility yet that there will be long term damage.

What it sounds like to me during the first 24 hours they were worried about the swelling, I don't know if any of you fellow Americans remember that girl that got hit in the head with a hockey puck during a game a few years ago, she seemed to take it alright and even walked away from the scene but within hours she died because of the massive swelling. I think that is why the doctors were so concerned for the first couple of hours, but the hamster has gotten through that now.

So hopefully he is on his way to a full recovery.

Yeah, just because he's been moved out of intensive care doesn't mean he's perfectly healthy (Brain wise). Whenever there are injuries to the brain, it's not good... people are different after they've had those types of head injuries.
