Default Chevrolet to get compact, rear-drive sedan!

December3

Chevrolet will get a vehicle based on the rear-wheel drive Alpha platform. Earlier reports indicated that Pontiac not Chevrolet would get an Alpha-based car. The Alpha architecture will also underpin a future Cadillac, slated to slot below the CTS.

GM needed a volume car for the Alpha program to make fiscal sense, with a Chevy sedan apparently being the best option. No time frame was given for production.

GM is hoping to pull from its Lambda program which underpins four crossovers: the Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia, Saturn Outlook and upcoming Chevrolet Traverse in order to successfully differentiate the Chevy model from the Cadillac.

According to Motor Trend, GM is also considering moving the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky from their current Kappa platform to Alpha in 2013. GM could not find a way to stretch the Kappa platform to underpin a rear-drive sedan, but could shorten the Alpha platform to work in a two-seat sports car.

Confirmed, is that right? Torrana was rumored to be Kappa-based, iirc, not Alpha.

I might be wrong.

The Torrano was never "confirmed" from my understanding. It was just speculation and still is.

I think GM made a bad decision to give Chevy this model instead of Pontiac. It just would have been more fitting as a replacement for the G6. I'll wait to here something more official than this though...

Torana was never really confirmed mate, they just said they would like to make it. But this is a different story, they are talking Alpha based and they just mentioned the Chevy brand so it might not be related to the Australian division plan at all

A RWD Chevy and not a Pontiac? Holy product overlap Batman! Pontiac could have generated enough mainstream sales and it would have been a smart replacement for the seemingly long it tooth G6.

Not really long in the tooth but not very good. I rent them now and again. The last of the old time GM crap cars (God willing.) I thought a small RWD was a natural son-of-Tempest for Pontiac as well. I don't know how this will fit between the Cobalt and the Malibu. Not easily, it would seem.

I've also heard the Cobalt was to move to Gamma. That'd leave a HUGE Gap in the lineup.
