My vote would go to both to incompetent brand planning and too big to fail mentality. I am afraid they still don't know the dig they are happily getting into...

How is Mary Barra more “image” than substance? Mary’s aggressive culling of brands and IMO premature exiting of growing markets doesn’t seem anything to do with “image” but rather an aggressive attack on what they think is profitable or unprofitable. Is it smart? I’m not sure.

Some conservatives somehow think appointing her was some social justice thing.
Despite her being extremely well qualified with now 40 years at GM in a huge range of positions.

Yeah, if anything she’s part of the problem of old-heads running GM and refusing to consider anything else.

I don't know, but appointing someone who's been with the same company for 40 years isn't necessary a good thing. It shows a lack of outside experience and entrenchment in the same company culture.

Exactly, she is no Mullaly, nor could she ever comprehend such a leader. Granted, given the lineage of dunderheads, including that perpetually drunk, senile ding-bat Bob Lutz ruining GM, at least she has planted ideas as she transplants the company to China on the US taxpayer's bill.

I assume part of it is b/c GM does full-sized trucks reasonably well, and Americans have a strange but powerful strange fixation with these gigantic and hugely profitable cars and will only purchase them from US-based companies.

GM would fail if it weren't selling cars.... But it does, in the US and China.

I'd read an article somewhere that dealers were pleading w/ GM to continue to make cars (Cruze / Volt) as they sell. Guess the brass knows best.

Selling is different than making a profit. Barra apparently said last year that GM doesn't expect to turn a profit on EVs until mid-2020 or even end of the decade....
