why would they emphasize the awkwardness by using a car with a number plate in front for press shots? looks like a badger eating a license plate

I'll repeat what I said about the concept; this car doesn't look anything like a BMW. It's a nice Infiniti. If you slapped any Japanese or Korean badge on this car, I'd believe it. The profile shot taken from the air is particularly "shocking" b/c there is literally resembling of a classic BMW silhouette anywhere to be found. The Buick Envision looks more European than does this car.

I guess BMW made the grille so big b/c nobody would believe this were a BMW based on the exterior otherwise?

Yeah from the side profile it looks straight-up Infiniti. The front is just hideous. It's not just the size of the grille, the front emblem looks like it's resting between cleavage and whatever that lower intake trim is on the edges squares off the bottom of the car.

Probably b/c that looks better than a plain badger/beaver/rabbit/whatever?

At the end of the day, this is still going to sell just fine b/c the car-buying public really only cares about a few things (the propeller badge being one of them). A Infiniti-shaped w/ a BMW badge is still more desirable an an Infiniti-shaped car w/, well, an Infiniti badge. And perhaps BMW thought it needed something to compete w/ the every-increasing-in-size 3-pointed star that MB is putting on its cars. Well, this'll do that.

And, in the US, depending on how long the economic downturn lasts.... BMW is notorious for subsidizing its leases so that it can report high sales numbers.... I assume this car will not be an exception to that.

Exterior comparison with the last gen:

This is way past a caricature IMO.

This is absolutely appalling. Even setting aside the grille, which by itself is an Aztec-grade disaster, this is a shapeless blob with melted surfacing and bloated proportions. Why on God’s green earth would they get rid of the Hoffmeister kink? What is in the water in Munich? The bustle-back E65 may as well be an Aston DB7 next to this.

Absolute trash. BMW is heading for a serious crisis.

I honestly really like it. It gives the 4-Series a much more aggressive look to it and in the M4 Competition trim it will look menacing. Overall it sticks pretty close to the concept which I like

Because it's a German car with the German plate and front license plates are mandatory there(and in the rest of Europe as well) and probably in majority countries around the globe - so that's how most of those cars will look like on the road except some US states - so I'd say it's quite logical.
