It seems no one like that idea nowadays, given how even very basic small cross overs and economy cars with barely enough power to move themselves out of the way need fake exhausts, -vents and huge wheels nowadays.

I'm really confused. I really don't get why they are having both the CLA and the AMG A35. I honestly struggle to tell them apart, even when looking at the rear end where the difference is the most visible.

I mean, this is par for the course with MB and BMW. Are you looking for an answer beyond the obvious "to sell more cars and make money"?

They do the same thing with their crossovers, GTs, new CLS vs. E-Class. *shrug*

agreed, it needs more mass towards the back of the car to offset the big overhang in the front. the A class roofline looks much better. CLA is a waste of time

I can tell the difference between a BMW GT and regular sedan, or the CLS and E-Class. The issue I have is that to my eye, the A35 and CLA have exactly the same body style.

To be fair, at BMW; you usually not only have a regular sedan and a coupe sedan (actually the gran Coupes), but also those weird, ungainly proportioned high roof GT hatchbacks. There, it is really crowded;

Whilst the difference between an E-Class and CLS is slightly bigger than between an A-Class sedan and CLA, I think with the current generation, it has shrunk considerably, given that the E-Class looks sleeker than before, can be had with various versions of "sporty" grilles (Please don't make me remember all their names), and the CLS having given up on a detailing of it's own, and a bespoke interior as well (now shared with the regular E-Class); Plus, Mercedes added the AMG GT hatchback as well, so basically a CLS coupe, or a coupe sedan coupe hatchback;

Clearly the German premium makers must think that there is a hell of a market for sedans in various degrees of sporty looks. That said, I think so far Audi does it the best (and the A7 and A5 do look the best to, IMO)
