It's like BMW isn't trying anymore.

In the design department, this conclusion is valid for quite a while now...

agreed although i can see this being stunning in person. One could (and one does..) say the same about Audi until you see some of their cars in the flesh.

This is still too much beholden to the ugly Bangle 6 series for me.

FIFY.

I really only had the reaction you describe w/ the original A5. I thought the A7 looked better in real life than pics (but not tremendously so), and the current A5 Sportback looks good in pics and in real life.

I agree that this BMW might be better in person b/c it can be hard to get a sense for how low and wide a car is in pics.

Actually, the Bangle 6-Series was a surprise for me. I hated the car with a passion by looking at pictures, but kind of liked it when I saw it in real life. Funny, huh.

I can't unsee the sad, droopy, stoner "eyes" or the bad-collision-repair trunk lid.

I agree on that (and same goes for the Bangle Z4); Generally, the Bangle BMWs are growing on me as time passes (okay, that 7 series will never be beautiful, even if it's butt got copied a lot), especially the E60 5 series, that to me nowadays looks way more attractive and even more modern than any generation after it.
