Default 2019 Road Rover

Autocar has some interesting ideas about Land Rover launching a new luxurious crossover vehicle by introducing a new sub-brand:

Let's assume it's real.

Let's assume we can get past the dumb sounding name.

Does this mean that the XJ can go back to being gorgeous instead of looking like an homage to the unloved Merkur Scorpio?

I rember reading that Jaguar hinted at the XJ not receiving a classic replacement. So probably this, a huge "Cross over (coupe?)" might be the replacement?

That said, I think it would be dumb to cancel the XJ, it is the brand's core model, like the 3 series for BMW, or the 911 for Porsche. The core model must always kind of be there and be good. It defines the brand's identity.

Road Rover sounds so lame... But then again lots of names begin like that and then we get used to them. Those renders are terrific, let's see which direction they take. The Road Rover line may look nothing like the Range Rovers although i realize that may be unrealistic.

basing this on a shared platform with the next XJ makes sense. Next year is the 50th anniversary of the original XJ, so that's a slam dunk. the economy of scale of using the platform on both sides of the JLR garage is also logical. The company also requires high added-value models to compete above the current Range Rover and XJ against the Bentaygas and Maybachs of this world. the ultra rich have cash to burn.

Name is dumb but those renderings are pretty awesome. Wish they’d just focus resources on getting the defender replacement to market ASAP. Strictly for selfish reasons :)

I'm just totally confused. Is "Road Rover" going to be the JLR version of the Volvo S60 Cross Country? I'm totally not seeing how there's space in the Land Rover/Range Rover lineup for an entire sub-brand of things resembling traditional SUVs.

This shouldn't be in Spy Shots...we have no spy shots or even confirmation that this vehicle exists in physical form. Could mods please move this to the Industry News and Rumors section?

Does JLR have the rights to the brand name?
