Perhaps, but Cadillac needs an attention getter.

If they did a premium product that was (1) the essence of a true Cadillac and (2) truly the standard of the world, it would set the stage for a renaissance.

The current Cadillacs--save the Escalade--are really what Buicks should be relative to Chevrolets. Cadillacs should be as imposing, upper-class, and patrician as the S Class is.

ATS-->Buick Regal
CTS-->Buick Skylark
CT6-->Buick Invicta

The XLR and ELR got neither attention nor sales. That's not to say Cadillac wouldn't be stupid enough to try again.

GM would get the best bang for the buck out of this platform by making it the mainstream Corvette replacement and keeping starting prices close to $80,000 (quite a leap from the current model but still far below the competition).

Thank you for proving my point. Cadillac's supposed renaissance with the Art and Science look have never produced an attention getter. The Ciel would have done it. The Elmiraj would have done it. A Cadillac sports car is no more outlandish than the Acura Fiero oops I mean NSX.

Well we now have incontrovertible proof the GM is well along the way on a mid-engine sports car:

It's still possible this will be a Cadillac but my eyes say Corvette. Cadillac's current blandtastic image couldn't accommodate something like this.

Acura makes Japanese Mercurys and pretends they are premium and they have the NSX. At least Cadillac actually is premium.:)

Man...those pic's don't do any favours to the franchise. This thing looks like a Corvette El Camino.

Kim Kardashian looks at that back end and blushes.

I'm hoping a LOT of disguise is still on the prototype and that this is in addition to the Stingray.

Its a prototype, is it supposed to look like an unveiling showcar? The last thing GM wants is to give any hint as to how this car with generations of anticipation will turn out. I mean really now.

I kind of also hope this will be an addition to the regular Vette. I mean the Corvette is one of the most iconic US cars, a success and poster child as well as respected around the world, why on earth would you want to change the concept dramatically?

I do think there would be room fo a classic Corvette and a "Chevy GT40", if they are really after Nürburg Ring lap times (not that the current front engine generation wouldn't be among the quickest things around the ring) or ultimate kick in handling (again, the current does that superbly).
