What if a reimagined Arteon-like sedan is the new Passat? Ford seems to be heading to a two-sized, mid-size sedan strategy with the Focus very obviously growing.

the tail is a rip-off of the Hyundai Sonata!

It looks fine, but also a lot like say a cross between a Hyundai and a Ford Fusion or Chinese Taurus and not very VAG like, apart form gille and lights. It could be anything. And the Audi A8's only standout feature to distinguish it from the previous generation - a huge hexagonal grille - will not really be special if it gets applied to every VW as well....

It looks more Audi's less attractive brother and in a few parts of Skoda. Front is terrible in those shots too.

Not a huge fan of the front either (although they've produced far worse) - crook looking noses seems to afflict most VW designs of late. A shame, as the rest of the design looks quite decent.

Not horrible, but it looks like an A4 and a last-gen Fusion had a love child and that no one will admit to being the parent.

I think the front end already looks dated. And, as everyone else has mentioned, there is very little about this that says, "VW."

I don't understand all the wild Sonata/Fusion/A4 references are coming from. It looks like the current Jetta with a very mild styling update. It's appropriate looking but not handsome and dull but not ugly.

All IMO, of course, but.... the tailights, to me, look like a virtual carbon copy of any current Audi sedan. The kink in the windowline behind the C-pillar is very reminiscient of the last gen Ford Mondeo. The slightly squashed DLO seems related to the current Fusion/Mondeo. Could be the angle of the photo, but the sleeker appearance is very un-VW (CC and Arteon aside), the surface development is markedly diferent, and even the door handles look quite different.

I actually think it looks quite decent.... But will it stand out in any way (other than having a Germanic driving flair, which mainstream America couldn't care less about) againt the very impressive crop of current mid-sized sedans? Prob not.

Looks even more downmarket

VW is wasting away from what made it a premium middle class brand.

Not really understanding the whole "downmarket" comment. It looks pretty decent. I much prefer the current design but of course that could change as soon as these hit the road.
