Part of the WRX's appeal are it's usable form factors. A 2 door is a fine addition but dropping the sedan or hatch wouldn't be a good idea.

Hopefully Toyota does not dilute the goodness (and what are they doing with Mazda?).

Might as well post this while I still have the ability to post.

Agreed - if they want to add it that's great, but replacing it over the sedan/hatch makes no sense...particularly given the dying coupe market. At least they're not making it a crossover...yet?

CG of those boxer engines is low enough to allow a crossover handle quite well. But, yes, keep it closer to the ground.

With larger wheels (think unsprung weight), ride height and roof height increased, the center of gravity of the engine is probably not the first thing that ruins handling though....

I maintain that CG is such a fixed, nonadjustable (unlike your list up there) fundamental chassis factor that it's influence is profound and under rated. Its not ideal but a better combination than any of BMW's smaller fast SUVs. Of course i'd rather they keep the present formula and offer a 2 door coupe, 4 door sedan and 5 door hatch. Practicality is part of what sells the WRX/STi imo.

I bring up CG as im just amazed how maneuverable a ho hum rental fleet impreza handles.

As for ride height, how much ground clearance to modern Crossovers have anyway?

How much better a Porsche Makan would handle if it had a low CG flat engine?

I didn't want to say that center of gravity is unimportant, in contrast, just SUVs/CUVS already mess the CoG up big time by their shape and generally added weight(and yes, even huge wheels move that up, apart from ruining ride and handling), that the influence of flat 4 vs. a normal inline engine is less of an issue compared to a lower coupe/sports car/roadster; Even a good CUV usually floates a lot more and handles less sweet than an average sedan/hatchback of comparable category; You can't trick physics....

And to the Imprezza: A good chassis will always show, just as much as an (below) average one will, despite all the trickery higher end models offer; I'd even go as far that, power aside, the lighter weight, not huge wheels base models of hatchbacks (and small sedans) often handle sweeter than some over assisted, super firm (and heavier) range topping car, that probably have better grip, but also more weight, but again. sheer steering feel and nimbleness of handling can suffer

They only mention the WRX STI not the standard WRX so maybe it's just a special run just like the original WRX STI 2 door coupe.

It'll probably be mostly a BRZ but maybe with a WRX front end. That's my guess.
