Well, to be fair, the I.D: is to spawn a family, so likely some members will make it to the US; probably not this, the smallest (and by looking at the guy sitting in the rear, it does seem quite tight, so probably to small for the US anyway);
From the tests I doubt it will be a 300 mile range, in one of the (German language) reviews of this they mentioned that at around 50% of charge it indicated a bit above 140 km of range, so probably more like a 300km range, at least in the base model;
Back to the US: I could also see VW selling them in Europe first because European customers are way more forgiving to VW in general than the US, so some teething problems (that any new platform will likely have) are certainly causing much less of an uproar here than in the US. Another point could of course be production capacities and probably setting up production for a larger I.D. family member in the US or Mexico....
