BryanRW, the Transit 14/15 seat Minibus is a LWB model. (wheelbase: 3750mm, overall length: 5680mm)
The "Transit 17 seat Minibus" beside your friend's Land Cruiser has the same 3750mm wheelbase as the "LWB" Transit 14/15 seat minibus, the main difference of the body is its longer rear overhang. (997mm vs 1720mm) Its overall length is 6403mm.
This is a MWB model (wheelbase: 3300mm, overall length: 5230mm)

Ford has been looking at the Transit in the USA for several years. Its been on again/off again for the best part of 10 years.
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Ford will have the Transit AND maintain a chassis based commercial base E series type.
The Transit will be like the F150 and cater to the "light duty" workloads.
The E series will bethe "Super duty" version for servicing heavier demands, bases for Ambulances etc.

In Europe, the Transit does those jobs too, hopefully they retain the RWD chassis cab models in the upcoming new generation Transit.

Come on, the LWB Transit can and does all those things as well. Or are stuff and people in the USA that much heavier?

Yes
The new Transit really will make the E-Series obsolete, so why can't some people accept that? Oh right, it's because its not American...

However, I expect that materials and some soultzions will still be simpler, given that tasks for a Van are different. Ofcourse Ford could chose the way VW does with their Transporter/Multivan, where the passenger version gets a more elegant interior from better materials and contorls form the car part bin, but lacking van stuff like document holder etc. But given the Transit was never offered in comparably plush passenger versions. I doubt it...

They'll probably continue to offer a Tourneo version of the next generation Transit.
Current Ford Tourneo

The top engine of the current RWD Transit/Tourneo is a 3.2 liter 5-cylinder diesel engine which makes 200PS (197hp) and 470Nm (346 lb-ft) of torque.
Thats almost the same tourqe as the 5.4 liter Triton V8 in the E-150, but then again I guess Americans probably feel they need the optional V10 Triton engine with 420 lb-ft of torque found in the E-series vans.
The big question is, how popular are these large super-sized engines?
Perhaps they will fit large gasoline engines for the USDM version.
Assuming its a carry-over platform, the engine bay of the Transit can fit a transverse inline-4 diesel engine and a longitudinal inline-5 diesel engine, maybe it can fit Ford's 3.7 liter V6 and new 5.0 liter V8 found in the updated F-150?

I also wonder if there could be an old coke new coke reluctance reaction to the Transit. Either way, I forsee an overlap in the sale of the two products.
